Community Outreach
September 2009
Karla Shetter began work as the Migrant Program Coordinator for Shawnee Health Service. The Migrant Health Center is based at Murphysboro Health Center. Ms. Shetter is responsible for the ongoing development and implementation of the farmworker outreach program. She has a Bachelor equivalent degree in Education from the National Major University of San Marcos, Peru, and is proficient in English and Spanish. She is a skilled interpreter and translator.
As the Migrant Outreach Coordinator, Ms. Shetter conducts outreach, health education, and case management services to farmworkers and their families, supervises staff and effectively manages clinic resources, while positively promoting the outreach program through appropriate community outlets. She is also responsible for assessing farmworker needs and evaluating the impact of services.
January 2009
Dr. Kelly Burshur, Clinical Psychologist at the Adolescent Health Center, will serve as the project Clincal Care Manager along with Dr. Canaley, Child and Adolsecent Psychiatrist, for a new mental health screening tool for K, 6 and 9th grade school physicals. This project is being funded from a grant received from the Illinois Children's Healthcare Foundation for the Integration of Primary Care and Mental Health Services.
December 2008
Gary Noble and Frank Jeters set up a new outreach site in Springfield, Illinois for the Southern Illinois Respiratory Disease Program. This site is located at athe UMWA District Office and will be staffed the third Thursdays of the month starting in January of 2009.
Carol Aronson, Program Director of Shawnee Alliance for Seniors, attended the Governors' Conference for the Aging Network in Chicago from December 10-12, 2008. Also while in Chicago, Carol met with the Health and Medicine Policy Research Group about Elder Economic Security and the Wider Opportunities for Women Elder Economic Security Initiative, of which Shawnee Alliance for Seniors is a state partner.

NATIONAL HEALTH CENTER WEEK is August 11-15, 2008.
Shawnee Health Service is celebrating the opening of the Southern Illinois Respiratory Disease Clinic in Carbondale, Illinois with an Open House on Thursday, August 14, 2008 from 4-6 pm. Dr. Dani Tazbaz and our team of respiratory specialists will all be available along with tours of our new regional facility. Please attend: 1335 Cedar Court, Carbondale, Illinois.
The Healthy Families Action Team of the Franklin-Williamson Healthy Communites Coalition will host a Carterville Community Block Party on Friday, August 8th, 5-8pm. There will be music, entertainment, games for the kids with prizes and lots of food and beverages. The event is free and everyone from Carterville is welcome.
Shawnee Health Service will participate at the Arthritis Foundation Seminar on August 14, 2008.

Connie Favreau and Joe Baker attended the annual retreat for the Illinois Coalition of School Health Centers in Chicago, Illinois this month. Connie will also be presenting on July 23, 2008 at the Indiana School Health Center conference, discussing the importance of collaboration in the development of School Health Centers.

Senior Fun Fest, May 30,2008 at John A Logan College was a huge success! Shawnee Alliance for Seniors is a sponsor of this event which is coordinated by the Franklin-Williamson Healthy Communities Coalition.

April 2, 2008: Sue Herbert conducted a session at the 4th Annual Meth Conference at JALC entitled "The Link between Elder Abuse and Substance Abuse."
April 1 and 2, 2008: David Mitchell conducted Phase II Elder Abuse Training for the IDOA in Springfield.
April 9, 2008: Sue Herbert conducted a seminar sponsored by the Carbondale Police Department "Identifying and Reporting Cases of Suspected Elder Abuse."
April 22, 2008: David Mitchell conducted a seminar for students from the SIU-C Health Ed program on the topic of the Illinois Elder Abuse Program.

Watch for information on the Hometwon Health Fair on Saturday, March 29, 2008 from 7:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. The Acces to Care Committee of the Jackson County Healthy Communites Coalition is planning the event. This event will take place at the Carbondale Wal-Mart with staff educating those who are unisured or under-insured to introduce them to resources and services available to them for health care and a wide variety of social services.

Joe Baker attend the SIH Faith-based Initiative day-long workshop at Hopewell Baptist Church in Carbondale, Illinois about HIV/AIDS in the African American community.
Melanie Nelson, School Nurse at Terrier Care, has completed her Vision and Hearing Training in Springfield, Illinois so she can do mandated testing for the school.
Shawnee Health Service opened our new Southern Illinois Respriatory Disease Clinic in Carbondale, Illinois. The Southern Illinois Respiratory Clinics (Herrin and Carbondale) provide the best respiratory care in the southern Illlinois area. Our doctors are trained and certified in pulmonary, internal, critical care medicine, and sleep disorders. Our nurses, rehabilitation specialists, case managers, and counselors understand the needs of people with COPD, asthma and other chronic lung disease.
Billing staff take part in several training sessions; Medical Necessity; FQHC Claims Processin gand FQHC Facts; and Top 10 Mistakes Coders Make during the month of February.

Outreach staff coordinated the Family Fitness Night in Murphysboro on the eveining of January 17, 2008.
Melissa Case and Jess Jobe attended the CEY Conference in Washington, D.C. January 16-18, 2008. Networking with other CEY grantees and collboration amoung partners were the highlights of the conference.
